Everything I Know About Endometriosis

I have Endometriosis. I’ve had it since I was 13 years old. Probably the whole time I have had menstrual periods (from 11). It’s a terrible fertility issue, but it’s much worse than bad periods. I am going to fill you in on everything I know about my issue and try to give you as much information as I can. I will have a podcast and a video for you later. I’m working on the content of those to keep you informed about the disease in any way that you learn.

What It Is

So it starts as a bad period and then gets worse. I had some really light normal periods in the beginning. It’s caused by the endometrium (what the lining of the uterus is made of) to grow outside it. I had stage 4 twice. I was so young when they found it that the first line of defense then was birth control. The second time with stage 4 was in 2011. I had a laparoscopy and it took care of it for a long time. Three years later I had to have a D&C (dilation and curettage) procedure…basically I was scraped out. Pregnancy has been mythed to stop it, that is why they use depot shot, but it does not. I have been pregnant twice and lost both children very quickly. The reason why it is so bad is because the lining outside of your uterus has a period too and you kind of bleed internally. Fun stuff! It’s super painful and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

What Can You Do About It?

There is no cure, but birth control and changing your diet can help. I have a really hard time with diet because of my many issues, but eating AIP (autoimmune protocol) or Paleo are said to help. I personally think cutting carbs out is pointless. You need to avoid red meat, soy, and caffeine. I do wonderfully with my endo, but not with my thalassemia when I avoid red meat. Black cohosh and red clover are natural ways to regulate it, but be careful. I have had some gnarly periods from red clover. Stay with a gyno. I know sometimes they seem insensitive, but they typically also have it. 11% of women do, so don’t push out their advice. Taking these things with your pill or contraceptive method can really cause it to get worse. I had a terrible time with it though I did have less cramps with black cohosh. It’s more for menopause.

You can’t really workout too heavily. I know they say that exercise is good for your cycle, but I had it so bad that it was unreasonable to do and I bled in between periods. If it has debilitated you start small. Just do something around the house until that’s easy then work out when you get used to that. If you can. The only person who you need to move around for is you and you can get healthy, but you have to stick to the pill or some sort of contraceptive to do it. Natural is always better if you can, but if it’s severe like mine is you need contraceptives. I still have cramps when I do too much and it’s awful.

I honestly have a hard time finding women with it, but I will be giving you more resources as I find them and I will edit this then.

  1. I can’t take the pill so maybe a natural remedy is worth a try. I’ve cut out meat, diary, sugar and fat before but I was still in pain and miserable. I now have Adenomyosis with my Endo and cysts which is awful. Just gets worse the longer I have it ☹️
